Bali: An Island Paradise

Bali has been dubbed the “Island of the Gods” and it’s easy to see why once you’re there. This Indonesian island makes the top of many travellers’ lists for its epic surf, lush rice fields and forested volcanic mountains – along with its distinct Hindu culture and breathtaking religious sites. It’s the perfect place to relax and redefine your priorities. Balinese culture is steeped in tradition and is often expressed through art, street processions and festivals. Bali has thousands of temples and each celebrates its own festival, with most lasting about three days. It seems nearly every Balinese person practices some form of art, craft, music, drama or dance. If you don’t know which of Bali’s temples to prioritise, be sure to see Pura Luhur Ulu Watu. It is perched atop cliffs in the island’s southwest and a definite sight to behold. Canggu is one of Bali’s trendiest destinations du jour – in part because of its proximity to the beach. It makes a great jumping off point to explore Seminyak (known for its stylish cafes and bars) and the surf mecca of Tanah Lot. Want to get below the waves? Dive at Pemuteran (an underwater park that combines art with marine reef rehabilitation) or the 30m wall at Pulau Menjangan. The mangroves of Nusa Lembongan, meanwhile, are accessible to snorkelers and are home to more multi-coloured fishes than you’ll be able to count. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, venture outside Ubud and south Bali. The north and west coasts (along with the central mountains) are ideal for solitude seekers. Those who want to stay active or explore their spiritual side will also find peace and quiet at one of the islands many yoga and meditation retreats. Best for: Beach Bums; Active Travellers; Voluntourists; Couples/Honeymooners; Self-Improvement/Health Travellers; Backpackers/Budget Travellers; Nature Lovers; Luxury Travellers
