Visiting Amsterdam? You’ll pay more in 2020

Expect to pay more for your hotel, guesthouse, campsite or Airbnb when you travel to the Dutch capital next year — the city will significantly bump up its tourist levy as of 1 January.

"It will likely make Amsterdam's the highest overnight tax in Europe, on average,”  explained Tim Fairhurst, European Tourism Association’s policy director in an interview with U.S. news agency, CNN

Amsterdam will charge an additional flat fee of €3 (about R49) per person, per night for guests staying in a hotel (on top of the current 7% room rate). Tourists staying in Airbnb rentals will also play an increased rent of 10% per night. Meanwhile, those staying at campsites will pay a flat rate of €1 (about R16) per person per night.

A couple staying at a €120-a-night-hotel for a week, for instance, would pay an extra €117.60 (R1928) on their accommodation — a significantly higher cost than other European cities with their own tourist taxes, like Paris or Rome.

It’s just one of many measures implemented to prevent mass tourism, says Vera Al, a spokesperson for deputy mayor Groot Wassink — and though it won’t stem the flow of Amsterdam’s 20 million annual tourists, it will help pay to keep the city safe, clean and maintain infrastructure.
