Visit the Netherlands

If it ain’t Dutch, it ain’t much? Or so the saying goes... The Netherlands is a country founded on innovation – its ever-tolerant and forward-thinking society seems to find creative ways to build on swampy marshlands, bike nearly everywhere and power much of the country with sustainable energy sources from windmills, solar energy and biomass.

Of the area claimed as the Netherlands, about 40% of land is either underwater in canals and lakes, or below sea level and protected by the country’s famous dykes. Unrelenting winds off the North Sea help fuel the pumps that keep the country dry.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s best-preserved canal cities. Seventeenth-century architecture blends with bridges and bike-lined railings, dotted with picturesque restaurants, Bohemian cafés and funky neighbourhoods. Pay the Van Gogh Museum a visit while you’re here, along with Anne Frank House.

Despite Amsterdam’s controversial cannabis cafés and infamous red-light district, the Dutch are Europe’s least prolific marijuana smokers – and highly unlikely patrons at brothels. However, they have a “live and let live” mentality that’s made the country millions in tourist euros over the years.

Venture out of Amsterdam for a well-rounded experience. Nearby Utrecht is similar to the capital with its canals, world-class cultural attractions and bumping nightlife, but without the crowds.

Rotterdam is the centre of cutting-edge architecture and design, while history and art buffs will want to visit Mauritshuis in The Hague and Haarlem and Delft are must sees for old-timey charm.
