Visit Philadelphia

Walk in the footsteps of America’s founding fathers – they lived and worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laying the groundwork for the creation of the United States.

Today Philly – as it’s affectionately called – is home to many sites that commemorate this important democratic history – and a whole lot more. A great time to visit is the Fall, when Autumn leaves change from green to brilliant reds, oranges, yellows and browns, and there’s a crispness to the air.

Visit Declaration House, where Thomas Jefferson lived when he wrote the Declaration of Independence (in just three weeks!), along with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.

The city’s most famous site is the Liberty Bell – a symbol of freedom that was rung on 8 July 1776 to mark the first hearing of the Declaration of Independence. This document was signed across the street at Independence Hall. There’s also the US’ oldest stock exchange, and Congress Hall – the building where George Washington and John Adams were inaugurated and the Bill of Rights was ratified.

But the City of Brotherly Love is more than historic sites: it has recently carved out a name for itself as a top destination for arts and culture. Spend a few hours at the Philadelphia Museum of Art or marvel at the scores of outdoor murals that showcase local talent. Much has changed since the prohibition days of the 1920s when Al “Scarface” Capone and others ran a fierce bootlegging business through Philly.

Most wouldn’t think of Philadelphia as a foodie city, however, the city’s restaurant scene is strong. Signature dishes include the Philly cheesesteak (a long, crusty roll filled with thinly-sliced sautéed rib eye beef steak and melted cheese), along with hoagies and cannoli. Philadelphians love food trucks and markets – the best are the Reading Terminal Market and Italian Market, with produce vendors, sweets and ready-to-eat takeaways.
