Visit Morocco

It’s difficult to believe Morocco is just an hour’s ferry ride from Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar – its culture is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition, with iconic monuments, bustling souks and solemn calls to prayer that feel a world away from the West.

The capital city, Marrakesh, has established itself as a go-to destination for Europe’s wealthy elite. Nevertheless, budget travellers can find authentic cultural experiences – like the evening food stalls erected in the famous Jemaa el Fna marketplace, where hungry locals come to rub shoulders with adventurous tourists over a plate of couscous. Food isn’t the only entertainment – the square is packed with storytellers, dancers, medicine men and snake charmers.

Despite years of French and Spanish colonial rule, the influence of medieval times is strongly felt in cities like Fez. Breathtaking by design, Fez sits at the crossroads of all Morocco’s major urban centres, making it an important link in the trade route. The Moroccan kingdom once stretched from Senegal all the way to Northern Spain, and echoes of this history can be heard in the twisting alleys of Fez.

With enough time, the independent traveller can hike the Atlas and the Rif mountains, ride camel-back into the Sahara Desert and camp with the nomadic Berbers, or kick back at a luxurious Atlantic resort or boutique hotel like the ones at Asilah or Essaouira – loved by hippies since the ‘70s

Morocco’s hospitality, generosity and openness will invite travellers back again and again.
