Visit Maldives

Scattered like a string of pearls in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are synonymous with world-class diving, luxury resorts and the ultimate honeymoon destination – all for good reason. Where else can you snorkel with whale sharks in the morning, dine like royalty for lunch and enjoy a sunset beach walk, without barely leaving your sumptuous accommodation on the water’s edge?

The 26 major coral atolls that makes up the island chain lie southwest of Sri Lanka and were first ‘discovered’ by Australian sailor, Tony Hinde, when the yacht he was sailing smashed into an atoll near the capital of Malé. Along with fellow deckhand, Mark Scanlon, he awoke to find himself shipwrecked in paradise, and so began the ultimate Robinson Crusoe adventure.

Hinde returned the following year, married a local woman, and would never leave again. But a secret like the Maldives was too good to keep, and by the end of the 1980s word had trickled out about the mythical island chain scattered between Africa and India.

The Maldives is no longer a secret by any means – some of the world’s most exclusive resorts are found in the Maldives. But all you need to do is dig your toes in the sand or plunge into the endless blue ocean, and it still feels like being shipwrecked in paradise.

Visit from December to May for good weather and an underwater safari of manta rays, sea turtles, whale sharks and schooling hammerhead sharks. The islands are a mesmerising treasure hunt for international divers, with seemingly endless seascapes to explore. During certain times of the year in the Baa Atoll, the waters around a few resorts come alive with light at night. It’s a beautiful spectacle – thanks to bioluminescent plankton.

The culture of the Maldives has been shaped by a history of Islamic seafaring and trade, and Malé, the capital, is bustling with markets, cafes and mosques. The densely-populated city is jam-packed with motorbikes and hidden side streets, ideal for an afternoon of exploring for those who want to experience the “real life” of Maldivians.

Please note: the majority of locals adhere to Islamic law, so research the islands’ practices and customs (or as your Sure Travel agent for advice) before travelling to ensure you won’t offend – or worse, end up in trouble with the law. And be aware that if you’re travelling during the holy month of Ramadan, most shops and services will be closed down during certain times for prayer.

Things can be a little more “relaxed” on tourist-designated resort islands when it comes to women’s dress and swimming costumes, public displays of affection, or the consumption of pork and alcohol – but best to always ask first.

Best for:

Beach Bums; Couples/Honeymooners; Luxury Travellers; Nature Lovers; Religious Travellers
