Machu Picchu limits entries to combat overcrowding

A trip to Machu Picchu is on most travellers’ bucket lists — but take note only a limited number of entrance tickets are now available on an hourly basis to prevent site degradation and overcrowding in the region.

Previously, tickets were allotted in morning and afternoon options, however, these have been discontinued and replaced with a limited number of hourly entrance tickets, available from 06h00 until 14h00 daily.

 The new hourly tickets only affect the time travellers enter the site, not how long they stay, says Machu Picchu’s director of development promotions, Jane Davidson, in an interview with eTNW.

“Overcrowding at bucket-list destinations like Machu Picchu is a concern,” adds Marelize Le Roux, general manager of Travel Vision.

“Changing to hourly tickets might be effective in controlling the masses, minimising the footprint in the area, and also preserving the environment,”
