Leading Travel Company Bans Single-Use Plastics

The Travel Corporation (TTC) is taking a strong stand against plastic pollution by banning all single-use plastic bottles and tags.

TTC is the parent company of Sure Travel’s partner tour operators Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, CostSaver, Brendan Vacations, Contiki, AAT Kings and Inspiring Journeys, as well as cruise lines Uniworld River Cruises, U River Cruises and hotel group Red Carnation Hotels.

Uniworld, Red Carnation Hotels and U River Cruises have already removed single-use plastic bottles from their operations and the rest of TTC’s brands will do the same from the beginning of the 2019 operating season. Non-biodegradable name tags and luggage tags will also get the boot.

The plastic ban across TTCs brands is expected to reduce plastic waste by several hundred thousand pieces per year.

“Our passionate, caring global team is unified in its total commitment to our mission to make travel matter. This means changing a number of ways we’ve operated in the past. This announcement marks an important next step in fulfilling our pledge to eliminate all non-essential single-use plastics across our all our operations by 2022,” says Brett Tollman, Chief Executive, TTC and founder of The TreadRight Foundation, TTC’s non-profit foundation that encourages sustainable tourism development through conservation, leadership and support for communities.

The plastic bottle and tag ban is one of several initiatives to achieve TTC’s public commitment to completely elimiate all non-essential single-use plastics across all operations by 2022, across all of its brands.

“Next we will continue our active efforts to find innovative ways to remove the few remaining single-use plastics throughout our organisation’s hotel properties, such as shampoo and body lotion plastic bottles,” says Tollman.
