Honeymoon Diaries: cruising the Danube River

Sure Travel Journey’s Assistant Editor, Rebekah, and her husband, Jean Luc, went to Europe on honeymoon this month. They’re back from their trip relaxed and refreshed — and eager to share about all the places they visited on board their epic 'honeycruise', courtesy of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. Here's what Rebekah had to say:

I’ve always pictured a honeymoon at a resort on a tropical beach — but when you marry someone who is a serious people person and always on the go, we had to consider an alternative.

A Uniworld river cruise was the perfect compromise: just enough action, people to meet and new things to see each day (for him) AND plenty of time to relax in between (for me)!

We were blown away by a stunning suite and amenities, as well as staff who went above and beyond (including our two butlers!), anticipating our needs before we asked.

They constantly surprised us with delightful little treats (delicious macarons, seemingly endless champagne and freshly baked cookies) and deluxe toiletries from L’Occitane and Hermès. No request was too big, no detail was too small.

By the time we arrived in Hungary, we were ready to live onboard for the rest of our lives! Photo by Rebekah Funk.

We often returned to our room to find travel tips, the next day's weather forecast — and little letters or invitations to special dining events that made us feel special (including rose petals, candles and chocolate hearts on our first night).

Our 8-day Enchanting Danube cruise from Passau, Germany to Budapest, Hungary was bliss from start to finish. By the end, our fellow guests felt like family — there was plenty of time to get to know them in between three- or four-course dinners, 'Do as the Locals Do' tours, cocktail hours, or evening entertainment by local musicians and dancers.

We loved travelling with people of all ages, getting marriage advice from couples with milestone anniversaries, learning more about their homes and families in places we haven’t visited yet, and celebrating with a lady who was on her 40th Uniworld cruise (!).

The verdict

If I’m completely honest, I wasn’t sure a honeymoon in Europe would be special since I’ve travelled there on my own several times (what a bratty problem to have!) — but Uniworld seriously raised the bar.

As an introvert, I loved the time to relax in between social events and sightseeing! Photo by Jean Luc Kalambayi.

I would highly recommend their river cruises to anyone who wants a mix of Old World romance, 5-star, all-inclusive luxury and stress-free travel! My husband is already dreaming of where we can sail next.
