All things red and racy

Enzo Ferrari, the famed driver who founded both the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix motor racing team and automaker Ferrari, was born in Modena in 1898. Travel to Italy on Trafalgar’s 8-night Best of the Italian Lakes and visit his home town on an excursion to this delightful Italian city.

Besides enjoying a nibble of salty prosciutto washed down with a sip (or two) of Lambrusco, a visit to the Enzo Ferrari Museum awaits. You’ll learn all about how Enzo designed his first Ferrari (only two were ever made), why the colour red is so closely associated with this brand, and the fascinating story behind the prancing horse logo.

Unlikely millionaires

Spain is home to many famous artists such as Picasso, Goya and Miro — and of course the inimitable Salvador Dali. Without question he was one of the most influential figures in modern art and known for his highly unusual paintings (melting clocks anyone), films, photography and sculptures.

Dali was incredibly imaginative and prone to bizarre behaviour at times. He also had a strange quirk in that he refused to pay his receptionists, instead gifting them with paintings and commissions. While this did not pay the rent, it did make them fabulously wealthy later in life when these works sold for millions.

Visit the Dali Theatre and Museum on the 9-night Highlights of France and Barcelona to see a range of his work and finish off the day with a sightseeing tour of Antoni Gaudi’s nearly-completed masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia.

Happy Birthday, Mr President

In May 1962, President John F Kennedy was serenaded by Marilyn Monroe at Madison Square Gardens in New York. The short snippet of ‘Happy Birthday’ is an iconic moment in time and the actress looked absolutely gorgeous in a sheer, flesh coloured dress covered in 2,500 Swarovski crystals.

This famous dress has been sold and resold for millions, most recently in November 2016 on auction to Ripley’s Believe it or Not — for a cool USD$4.8 million.

The Swarovski crystal empire was founded by Daniel Swarovski in 1895 and it is today one of the world’s premier jewellery and accessory brands. Visit Swarovski Crystal World, outside Innsbruck, on Trafalgar’s 12-night Best of Germany and Austria
