Be my guest: an introvert’s guide making friends while travelling

Holidays are all about making lasting memories and a sure way to do this is to connect with the locals — but how do you do this if you’re painfully shy, or just unsure of how to bridge cultural (or language) barriers? We can help.

Plus, enter to win a Box of Delights from Trafalgar, worth R800! Details below.

1. Be yourself

Meeting locals while you travel doesn’t require you to reinvent yourself in each new country to avoid being dubbed an outsider — nor must you overlook popular tourist attractions just because they’re not typically places you’d meet locals.

So visit the Eiffel Tower, hike to Machu Picchu and take in Times Square to your heart’s content! After all, this is your chance to connect with local tour guides and the local tourism/hospitality staff on site, who can provide valuable insights about what life is like wherever you’re visiting.

. . .

2. Be open

American travel guru, Rick Steves recommends using your camera or a map as an ice breaker.

“Offer to take someone’s picture or ask a local to take a picture of you,” he says — or take out a map and look lost: “You’ll get help. Perceive friendliness and you’ll find it.”

. . .

3. Try something new

Take an evening cooking class or language course; you can even volunteer to help out at a conversational English meet up in a local coffee shop (you might be the only native speaker there)! Use social media or online meet up groups to connect with locals who share your hobbies and interests, and find fun events in the area you’ll be travelling.

Local laundromats are a good place to find people with time to kill. Or buy a ticket for a local sports match and don the local colours to cheer on the home team. As long as you get creative and are willing to expand your horizons, you’re sure to come home with exciting stories to tell.

. . .

4. Travel with “strangers”

Group travel can be a catalyst or a curse when it comes to meeting locals. If you’re travelling with a group of friends from home, it could mean you never push your comfort zone to talk to strangers, or that locals might be intimidated to approach a crowd.

But travel with a tour of like-minded travellers from around the world and every moment will present an opportunity to get to know a stranger — whether you’re on a bus, boat or beach. Extroverted group members tend to kick off the conversation, while introverts can chime in with less pressure than a one-on-one interaction.

This is particularly useful if you plan to visit several destinations in a relatively-short amount of time, since you might not have enough time to get to know a local before you move on to the next city. Trust us, when you’re spending days and even weeks with the same group, you’ll get to know everything you wanted (and sometimes didn’t want) to know about your fellow adventurers.

. . .

5. Say yes to invites from “friends of friends”

Sometimes, it all comes down to connections to get those infamous “invites to family dinner” every well-worn nomad raves about.

Lucky for those of us without the ins, companies like Trafalgar have been treating travellers to authentic experiences with locals through its Be My Guest itineraries. You’ll feel like family by the time you leave — and there are so many incredible experiences and destinations to choose from. Ask your nearest Sure Travel agency how you can join the fun!
