Applying for a US visa? Make sure your social media accounts are squeaky clean

You might want to rethink the photos and posts on your social media pages if you're in the process of applying for a visa to the United States of America.

The US State Department now requires most people to submit their social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers when applying for a visa, according to travel news website, eTNW — only applicants for certain diplomatic and official visa types will be exempt from providing these details.

"The US Embassy has confirmed to eTNW that it has updated its immigrant and non-immigrant visa forms to request additional information, including ‘social media identifiers’, from applicants."

The new visa application forms ask applicants to provide account names for the various social media platforms they've held in the past five years (along with a space to  volunteer information about platforms not listed on the form).

In addition to their social media histories, visa applicants are now asked for five years of previously used telephone numbers, email addresses, international travel and deportation status, as well as whether any family members have been involved in terrorist activities.
