Underwater rooms are on many post-pandemic bucket lists. And with good reason: these engineering feats tantalise travellers with the rare opportunity to submerge all their senses in total luxury a few feet below sea level.
Here are some of our top underwater rooms around the world:
Located 250 metres from the shore of the Manta Resort, this floating structure is like a man-made ‘blue hole’ sunk into an ocean teeming with marine life.
After a boat ride to the room, guests are given a kayak, snorkel and fins to paddle or dive at their leisure. Or simply watch the abundant marine life around the reef from the comfort of your plush glass-panelled bedroom.
There’s no need to leave your floating aquarium either, as breakfast and dinner is brought straight to you by boat.
Far away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai’s jet-setting hotel scene, lie the two underwater suites of the Atlantis the Palm.
The two suites are submerged in the man-made Ambassador Lagoon coral reef, home to around 65,000 marine animals, including a few sharks.
Named Poseidon and Neptune, these lavish suites each have three floors, two of which are submerged and house a palatial-sized lounge, bedroom and bathroom.
Best of all, the suites are serviced by a private butler, ensuring you can stay submerged throughout your stay.
Dubbed the world’s first underwater hotel villa, The Muraka at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a stunning two-level residence.
The submerged bottom level houses the bedroom, living area and large bathroom, while the above-sea level boasts a private infinity pool.
Underwater villa guests get the full luxury treatment, including a 24-hour butler, chef, personal gym with optional fitness trainers and massage therapists, and a speedboat to zoot across the Maldivian ocean.
The Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland is an engineering feat of note: the 18-storey hotel has two entire floors submerged beneath a 33-foot-deep aquarium filled with exotic marine life.
In these two floors lie two lavish underwater suites, as well as an expansive restaurant, Mr Fisher, where all hotel guests dine surrounded by full-length glass windows looking onto coral reefs.
An added bonus is that this hotel has excellent eco-credentials, such as using mostly renewable energy and a ceiling covered in greenery to blend into the countryside.
Currently the United States’ only undersea hotel, Jules' Undersea Lodge has an unconventional check-in system: guests have to scuba dive to get to their rooms!
Built 10-metres deep on the bottom of Emerald Lagoon, underwater room guests can experience what it’s like to be a fish in an aquarium as the rounded glass windows of their rooms attracts curious fishy visitors day and night.
