5 East African World Heritage Sites to add to your bucket list

We love Africa and we’re extremely proud of all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites found all over the continent. If you’ve ever wanted to travel to Kenya or Tanzania, here’s a few places you should add to your bucket list.

Plus: win a two-night stay with Sure Travel and City Lodge Hotel Group! More details below.

1. Stone Town, Zanzibar

When people think of Zanzibar, they automatically imagine stunning beaches and 5-star resorts. There is that side to the famous island but that’s not all it has to offer.

Since 2000, the capital city of Zanzibar, Stone Town, has been protected because of its historical and traditional importance. The town is one of the best examples of a Swahili trading town and has been a hot spot for trading along East Africa for hundreds of years!

Where to stay

City Lodge Hotel Dar es Salaam is just a 10-minute drive from the Zanzibar ferry terminal — a convenient place to stop over if you’re heading to the island and already had a long day of travel. The city itself is an interesting melting pot of cultures and is great fun to explore.

Save up to 25% on your stay when you book City Lodge Hotel Dar es Salaam with Sure Travel! Valid for stays until 31 December 2019. Rate includes bed, breakfast and all taxes. Additional Ts & Cs may apply.

2. Ngorongoro Crater & Serengeti National Park

Did you know that two of the world’s most beautiful World Heritage Sites are next door to each other? The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater have been drawing tourists from all over the world for decades, and for good reason.

Let’s start with the Ngorongoro Crater. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1979 because of its huge biodiversity, Maasai culture and the crater itself, found in the remnants of a volcano. It’s the largest caldera in the world!

The Serengeti National Park has been on the list of World Heritage Sites since 1981 because of its world-famous migration of zebra and wildebeest. Every year herds of these species follow the rains and migrate to new areas in search of food and water.

This epic trek is where you can find some of the most dramatic natural dramas playing out every day. From crossing crocodile-infested rivers to being followed by packs of hungry lions, the great migration is the most action-packed game viewing in Africa.

3. Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, towering 8,895 meters above the Tanzanian savannah. Unlike most of the world’s highest peaks, Kilimanjaro isn’t part of a mountain range. It’s a free-standing volcanic peak, which rises out of a grassland. The result is that it’s one of the most photogenic and iconic mountains in the world.

Adventurers from all over the world make the climb to the roof of Africa. The popularity of the climb has led to multiple routes being developed for hikers of different skills and fitness levels. Even if you’re not the exploring type, there’s an easier route that makes the peak accessible to most able bodied tourists.

4. Lamu Old Town

Heading to Kenya? Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Lamu Old Town. It’s been a World Heritage Site since 2001 because it’s the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in the whole of East Africa.

Where to stay

If you’re heading to the island of Lamu via the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and need a place to stay, we’ve got your back with a selection of great hotels to suit your required comfort level and pocket. Contact your nearest Sure Travel agency to book a stay at Fairview Hotel, City Lodge Hotel at Two Rivers Mall or Town Lodge Upper Hill

5. Lake Turkana

High in Northern Kenya you’ll find one of the world’s saltiest desert lakes! Lake Turkana has been a World Heritage Site since 1997 because of its outstanding animal and plant life research opportunities.

The lake is a yearly stop over for huge flocks of migrating birds and is the breeding ground for crocodiles, hippos and — wait for it — venomous snakes. But don’t let that deter you from visiting! The colour and saltiness of the lake have led to it being nicknamed the jade lake, and it’s absolutely stunning.
