New 7 Wonders travel: the ultimate #noregrets bucket list for 2019

The start of a new year is a feast for travellers, with new tours, flight routes and destinations to consider. Youth specialist tour operator Contiki has added to the wanderlust with the launch their New 7 Wonders trip, which includes all of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

The itinerary is based on a campaign in 2000 led by philanthropist, Bernard Weber where the new wonders were chosen based on more than 100 million votes.

“We’ve made it that much easier to visit them all in 2019, by combining 5 Contiki trips into one,”  says Kele Scheppers, Marketing Manager for Contiki in South Africa.

If you’re ready to take on the ultimate #noregrets bucket list, here’s a round-up of the new Seven Wonders of the World:

#1 The Taj Mahal in India

Located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, the Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house his beloved late wife Mumtaz Mahal.

“This iconic monument with its domed central tomb and surrounding minarets makes it one of the world's most recognizable and beautiful buildings, especially at sunrise and sunset,” adds Kele.

#2 The Great Wall of China

Built more than 2,000 years ago to keep invaders from crossing the northern border, the Great Wall of China consists of a series of walls and fortifications.

“Over the years, erosion and flooding have caused substantial damage but there are, however, a few restored sections, including Mutianyu, outside of Beijing.”

#3 Chichen Itzá in Mexico

Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is well-known for its ancient Mayan sites, including Tulum, above the Caribbean Sea and Coba, with its nine-tier pyramid. However, the largest — and most renowned ruin is Chichén Itzá.

This incredible complex dates back to 600 A.D, and is also dominated by a 23 metre, pyramid-shaped temple known as El Castillo.

#4 Machu Picchu in Peru

Another new wonder of the world is Machu Picchu. This ancient Incan fortress in Peru is set in a remote location in the Andes, within a sprawling complex of intricate stone buildings.

Machu Piccu has long been a source of fascination throughout the world, and once there, Kele highly recommends travellers get a mandatory selfie with the photobombing llamas.

#5 Christ the Redeemer in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue is Brazil's most famous landmark, perched atop the Corcovado Mountain with outstretched arms.

“In addition to the statue, you'll be also be treated to stunning views of the Rio skyline and Sugarloaf Mountain. Everything is illuminated at night, giving the illusion that the statue is floating in the darkened sky, keeping watch over the city.”

#6 Petra in Jordan

Located on the edge of the Arabian Desert, Petra was once the capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV dating back to 40 A.D.  The city is unique for its tunnel constructions and water chambers engineered by the Nabataeans, who were early masters of water technology.

Memorably featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Petra’s temples and tombs are even more iconic up close, intricately carved into the pink sandstone cliff faces.

#7 The Colosseum in Italy

The Eternal City is home to more ancient treasures than we can count, but one that's truly worthy of being called a wonder of the world is the Colosseum.

“This massive arena, where gladiators fought to the death, was built around 80 A.D., supporting 50,000 people in tiered seating,” explains Kele. “If you’re off to Europe in 2019, this is an icon you won’t want to skip.”
