5 fairytale Christmas markets in Europe

Arguably the most magical time of the year to head north, the festive season in Europe will cure even the most extreme case of Christougenniatikophobia (a fear of Christmas). So step aside Ebenezer Scrooge – here are Europe's top five Christmas market destinations:

Munich | Germany

Marienplatz provides a magical backdrop for the annual Christkindlmarkt — a fairy-lit festival of music, festive spirit and fun. A massive Christmas tree towers over the traditional stalls which sell hand-crafted tree decorations, toys and traditional sweets like the peculiar Zwetschgenmanderl, little figurines made from prunes. Visit each stall and sample tastes of traditional Bavarian Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Glühwein (mulled wine).

Leipzig | Germany

Renowned as one of Germany’s most beautiful Christmas Markets, the historic market square plays host to a celebration that dates back to the 15th century. Much of the action is focused in front of its beautiful Old Town Hall, but wind your way along any of the streets that lead off f

rom the square and you’ll remain immersed in the tradition, music and magic.

Kraków | Poland

Pop the cork on this charming Polish event with a walk around the Cloth Hall in Market Square, where festive Christmas market stalls are decked out with all sorts of delicacies and delights. Shop for Highland woollen slippers and amber jewellery from the Baltic against the backdrop of the city’s gabled townhouses and Gothic spires. You can’t visit this market without sampling the traditional Tatra oscypek cheese with cranberries.

Salzburg | Austria

Waltz through the former home of Mozart and into a fairytale land of music, spires and domes. Visit the maestro’s family home on the Getreidegasse, which is beautifully decorated at this time of year. Then, head to the 500-year-old Christmas Market in front of the cathedral. Keep a keen eye out for special events like the Krampus parades (a terrifying and thrilling event), choral concerts, and visits by the “Christ Child”.

Nuremberg | Germany

Renowned as Germany’s most famous Christmas Market, this event dates back to the early 17th century and is characterised by the traditional red and white cloths which adorn the numerous stalls. You’ll be surrounded by ancient ramparts and watchtowers as you shop for local treats like Rostbratwürste, Lebkuchen and the local blueberry Glühwein.
